Sun Valley
mountain resort city (1990 pop. 938), alt. c.6,000 ft (1,830 m), Blaine co., S central Idaho; inc. 1967. It is a popular year-round resort with both winter and summer sports. It was founded as a ski resort in 1936 by W. Averell Harriman , then board chairman of the Union Pacific RR; the railroad purchased the land and built the resort to attract more passenger traffic to the West. In 1964 it was sold to a land-development corporation; in 1967, Bill Janss, a former Olympic skier, became sole owner. The Hemingway Memorial, on a bluff overlooking a swift-flowing trout stream, was dedicated in 1966.
