Marse Joe,
as he was known, became manager of the American League's New York Yankees in 1931. During his 16-year tenure with the Yankees his teams won eight league pennants and seven world championships. He later managed (1948-50) Boston in the American League. In 1957 he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
