Highland Park



1 City (1990 pop. 30,575), Lake co., NE Ill., a suburb of Chicago on Lake Michigan; inc. 1869. It is a retail business and medical center for the North Shore area. Nearby Ravinia Park is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in residence for the Ravinia Music Festival, held there annually since 1936. Adjacent Fort Sheridan closed in 1993; part of the area is now a National Historic Landmark District.    2 City (1990 pop. 20,121), Wayne co., SE Mich., within the confines of Detroit; laid out 1818, inc. as a city 1917. Traditionally linked to Detroit's automobile industry, Highland Park grew after Henry Ford established the first Model T plant in the city in 1910; it was there that assembly-line production was first based. The city experienced major outmigration in the 1980s and 90s as the automotive industry, including the world headquarters of the Chrysler Corp., left the area.
