Engel, Marian

1933-85, Canadian novelist. Widely considered one of Canada's major modern writers, she is particularly noted for work reflecting a strongly feminist approach. Engel's best-known novel is Bear (1976), a controversial best-selling tale of erotic love between a librarian and a bear. Her other novels include No Clouds of Glory (1968), The Honeymoon Festivel (1970), The Glassy Sea (1979), and Lunatic Villas (1981).

Bibliography: See C. Verduyn, ed., Marian Engel's Notebooks: Ah, Mon Cahier, Ecoute (1999); study by C. Verduyn (1995).
